It is always difficult when a loved one passes away. It can be especially difficult, however, for children to accept the death of a loved one, much less what death exactly is. As a parent, you become naturally concerned for your children’s wellbeing when the family undergoes grief. Here are a few guidelines to follow to help your kids get through such a time.
Take Care of Yourself
First and foremost, you can allow yourself to grieve at the same time as your children. You have to take care of your wellbeing before you can care for your children. Although it is important to talk with other adults who have experience with death, you can also talk it out with your children.
Be Open and Honest
Now, to start to help your children, you can talk openly with them as previously mentioned without sugarcoating reality. The more open you become in front of your kids, the more open they can become with you. You want an honest and open child rather than a reclusive, unfeeling one.
You can also try to bring your child or children’s teachers on board with what your family is going through. You can talk with the principal and the teachers; alternately, you can e-mail the school. Onboard teachers can act as the “parents” of your children while in school; they can be the ones to talk to and listen to your children’s grief.
